Skincare for a newborn isn’t about a long list of products — it’s a small handful of simple habits, done consistently. Here’s a routine that covers the basics without overcomplicating things.
Morning: a quick top-and-tail
A full bath every day isn’t necessary (see our guide on how often to bathe a newborn), but a gentle wipe of the face, hands and nappy area with a damp cloth is a good daily habit.
Bath time: 2-3 times a week
When it is bath day, keep water warm rather than hot, and use a gentle, tear-free wash such as our Goat’s Milk Baby Soft Bath. Pay attention to skin folds at the neck and underarms, and rinse thoroughly.
After bath: dry and moisturise if needed
Pat skin dry rather than rubbing, especially in folds. If skin tends to feel dry, a light moisturiser can help — some parents find a formula with added vitamin E, like our Vitamin E Bath, useful as part of this step.
Throughout the day: nappy area care
Frequent nappy changes, cleaning gently, and letting skin air out for a few minutes where possible all help prevent nappy rash. Barrier creams can help if redness does develop — if it doesn’t improve within a couple of days, it’s worth checking with a GP or maternal health nurse.
Watch for the basics
Keep an eye on the laundry detergent used for baby’s clothes (fragrance-free is worth considering if skin seems sensitive), dress baby in soft, breathable fabrics, and avoid direct sun exposure for very young infants.
None of this needs to be complicated — a simple, repeatable routine is more useful than a long list of products used inconsistently. This is general guidance, not medical advice; always check with your GP or maternal health nurse about anything specific to your baby.
