A consistent bath-to-bed routine is one of the most commonly recommended tools for helping babies wind down in the evening. It doesn’t need to be elaborate — the consistency matters more than the specifics.
Why a routine helps
Babies (and toddlers) tend to feel more settled when they can anticipate what happens next. A predictable sequence of steps each evening can act as a signal that the day is winding down, even before a baby understands the concept of bedtime.
A simple bath-to-bed sequence
- Bath. A calm, unhurried wash — our Happy Bedtime Bath pairs the usual goat’s milk formula with a light, natural aroma, though our regular Soft Bath works just as well if you’d rather keep scent out of it entirely.
- Dry and dress in sleepwear, keeping the lighting low and the pace unhurried.
- A quiet activity — a short story, a feed, or some gentle rocking, away from bright light or stimulating play.
- Into bed at roughly the same time each night, in the same space, where possible.
Keeping it realistic
Not every night will go to plan, and that’s fine — the value of a bedtime routine comes from general consistency over time, not from being followed perfectly every single evening.
When to start
Many families begin introducing a simple routine from a few weeks old, though newborns won’t follow a predictable sleep pattern immediately regardless of routine — that develops gradually over the first few months. If sleep continues to be a significant struggle, a maternal health nurse or GP can offer guidance tailored to your baby.
