How to Choose a Baby Body Wash for Sensitive Skin

2 min read

Some babies seem to react to almost anything — a slightly stronger fragrance, a new detergent, a wash that’s fine for other babies but leaves theirs looking a bit blotchy. If that sounds familiar, here’s what to actually look for when choosing a body wash.

Signs a baby might have more sensitive skin

  • Redness or mild irritation that shows up after bath time specifically
  • Skin that feels dry or tight soon after washing
  • A pattern of reacting to new products more than siblings did at the same age

These are general patterns worth being aware of, not a diagnosis — persistent, worsening or widespread skin issues are always worth a proper check with a GP, rather than working through products by trial and error.

What to look for on the label

  • Soap-free and pH-balanced — closer to skin’s natural pH than a standard soap bar.
  • Tear-free — a reasonable proxy for a mild, low-irritation formula overall.
  • Fragrance-light — added fragrance is one of the more common triggers for sensitive skin.
  • Free from parabens and added dyes — fewer unnecessary ingredients in the mix.

Ingredients that may help

Formulas built around goat’s milk are popular for sensitive skin because they cleanse without the stripping effect of soap. Some parents find an added ingredient like rice extract helps further — our Rice Milk Bath was formulated with this in mind — while others prefer the antioxidant support in our Vitamin E Bath. If you’re not sure where to start, our everyday Soft Bath is a good gentle baseline to try first.

How to test a new product

Patch-test on a small area of skin first, and give it a day or two before judging the result. If redness, rash or discomfort develops, stop use and speak with your GP or maternal health nurse — this article is general information and isn’t a substitute for medical advice.
